Taxonomy workshop
The taxonomy workshop takes place weekly in collaboration with the Zoological Research Museum Alexander König (ZFMK). The basic idea of the taxonomy workshop is to introduce students interested in science to observing and recognizing species. Once a week, the students at Museum Koenig get to know a different group of animals, plants or fungi and find out what methods scientists use to identify the individual species. To do this, they work in the museum with research assistants and freelancers. There are also excursions into the surrounding area to conduct field research. There is also the opportunity to take part in weekend excursions such as a taxonomy weekend in the Eifel Nature Park in order to deepen your knowledge of the species. In the new school year, two groups from our school will take part in the taxonomy workshop. A new group with interested students from the 6th grade will take place on Thursdays in the 6th and 7th periods. In addition, a group of students who have already trained in recent years continue their taxonomy studies at the ZFMK on Tuesdays after class.
Night of Mathematics
Once a year, the students in the 5th and 6th grades meet on Friday evenings for Mathematics Night. Here we work on difficult puzzles and thinking tasks and brooded, tried out and tinkered with math games or even ate a sausage to take a breather. Stars can be collected at the individual stations and at the end of the “night” a “winner” is chosen. A win is guaranteed for all students: fun with mathematics.
The Mathematics Night is organized and prepared by a team of mathematics teachers in order to get students in our school excited about mathematics in the 5th and 6th grades. The team receives help with care from students from the upper grades of our school. Food and materials are financed by the ESG support association.
Student company Happywood
The student company Happywood has existed at our school since 2004. Happywood is a small, student-run business with the goal of making a variety of sustainably produced school supplies accessible to students and teachers conveniently and at fair prices. By purchasing and using notebooks, folders, pads, rulers, brushes, pens, compasses, foils and other items with a favorable ecological balance, everyone can make a contribution to a safer future.
In parallel to promoting environmental awareness, Happywood would like to offer the students involved a practical field of activity with learning and support opportunities outside of regular lessons. Disabled and non-disabled students organize sales, staffing, orders, advertising and accounting as a team in which everyone can contribute their skills and contribute to the common goal of environmental protection.
The student company does not aim to make profits and can therefore offer environmentally friendly materials at low prices. The students’ certificate confirms their regular and reliable work at Happywood. In addition, Happywood representatives attend training fairs and student company meetings. Happywood employees regularly take part in the student company fair in the Old Town Hall in Cologne. There they present their company alongside trade training companies and answer questions from jurors and compare them with other student companies in the Cologne Student Companies Network. In 2013 they took 1st place for their presentation.
The sales room (J001) is open daily during the breakfast break from 10:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
School paramedic
In the 7th year, some students from each class of the Elisabeth Selbert Comprehensive School are trained to become school paramedics. You will learn all the first aid measures at the scene of an accident during a detailed training course carried out by experts from Johanniter Accident Aid. The new candidates are then trained by experienced school paramedics. Our students benefit in two ways. They learn practical skills for their lives, experience themselves as helping people and receive positive feedback. You learn to deal with responsibility and at the same time know your limits. Injured or sick students receive help and attention from qualified classmates.
The school benefits from the school medical service because it relieves the burden on teachers. They can have their students picked up by school paramedics and continue teaching, while the sick or injured students are cared for professionally until parents or medical help arrive.
The school paramedics meet regularly to discuss case studies and refresh their knowledge and skills. They are organized in mixed-age teams of four school paramedics each and cover the entire teaching and break times. At school festivals, sporting events and cultural events, the school paramedics are supported by staff and equipment from Johanniter accident assistance. This creates personal contacts with professional first aiders and sometimes there is even the opportunity for an internship. The school paramedics who have worked regularly receive a supplementary sheet with their certificate, which has been very helpful when applying.
