School regulations

of the Elisabeth Selbert Comprehensive School

(As of March 2024)

ESG ideals:
  • We behave respectfully towards all people in our school community and towards all things in the environment in which we learn and work together.
  • We act non-violently.
  • We pay attention to cleanliness.
  • We learn with and from each other and support each other.

These regulations are intended to regulate behavior in our school so that we all feel comfortable here and can work undisturbed. Pupils, teachers, staff and parents treat each other in a friendly manner and observe the rules of the school regulations.

Basic
  • These school regulations apply on the entire school grounds (plan appendix 2) during school hours (7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and at all school events.
  • The teachers can be reached via the school or via work email. The students always have a current student ID card and their school planner with them in class. Parents can be contacted by the school by phone or email and regularly consult the school planner.
  1. Lesson times and breaks
    1. The school is open between 7:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. only for students, teachers and employees. Visitors should report to the secretariat.
    2. The foyer is open to students from 7:30 a.m. The lockers can be accessed from 7:45 a.m., during lunch breaks only in the first and last 5 minutes.
    3. Classes usually start at 8:00 a.m. All students and teachers must be punctual at the start and end of lessons and school events.
    4. If their children cannot attend class, parents or adult students should call the office themselves between 7:15 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. After returning to school, absences must be excused in writing within three days. A medical certificate is required for absences immediately before and after the holidays.
    5. Secondary level I students are not allowed to leave the school grounds without the permission of a teacher.
  1. Behavior in the house and on school grounds
    1. We behave with consideration towards each other.
    2. The instructions of all employees must be followed.
    3. Every teacher is entitled, if there is reasonable suspicion that objects are being carried on the school grounds that are prohibited according to these school regulations, to search the bags and other items carried by the students, such as clothing, after consulting a member of the school management, and to take the items prohibited according to these school regulations if they are found.
    4. Drugs, smoking and alcohol are prohibited on the entire school premises. The school conference determines exceptions to the alcohol ban (e.g. at graduation ceremonies).
    5. Dangerous objects are not allowed to be carried on school grounds by students. Dangerous objects are objects that, by their nature and properties, are designed to cause serious harm to other people. These include in particular:
      • Knives or other tools such as hammers, screwdrivers or similar (unless needed for teaching purposes)
      • All types of irritant sprayers
      • Electric impulse devices
      • Quartz sand gloves
      • Batons, baseball bats or similar objects
      • Pyrotechnics, fireworks, firecrackers or similar objects
      • Pyrotechnics, fireworks, firecrackers or similar objects
      • corrosive or flammable liquids
      • Laser pointer
      • Lighters
      • Paint spray cans and other pressure spray cans such as deodorant spray or hair spray
      • Prohibited items according to Appendix 2 to §2 Weapons Act (so-called “weapons list”)
      • Items that are not defined as “forbidden to handle” according to the weapons list can be picked up from the office by the legal guardian or another authorized person after the end of class. Items that are defined as “prohibited for handling” according to the weapons list will be handed over to the police. A criminal complaint will be filed in every case.
    6. Partisan, discriminatory and racist statements or symbols are prohibited.
    7. We wear clothing appropriate to the school as a place of learning and working.  Full veiling and masking are prohibited.
    8. Sound and image recordings are prohibited unless they are expressly permitted by the responsible teacher. Written permission must be presented outside the classroom.
    9. Students are not allowed to use electronic devices they bring with them without express permission. The current media usage regulations apply (Appendix 1).
    10. We keep doors and paths clear. Backpacks are not allowed to be left in the hallways.
    11. We pay attention to the cleanliness of the school and treat the furnishings and objects with care.
    12. We throw our rubbish in the rubbish bins and also pick up our rubbish.
    13. We behave and move calmly in the school building. Ball games are only permitted on the sports areas.
    14. Bicycles are parked in the bicycle cellar (7:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or at the bicycle racks. Bicycles or similar that are in escape routes will be removed for a fee.
    15. Additional rules apply to some rooms and events (e.g. cafeteria, games container, student café, excursions, school trips).
  1. Mandatory standards for teaching
    1. The lesson times are binding for everyone involved in the school.
    2. The required materials (including school planner) are on the table until the bell rings.
    3. Everyone stands up to greet you.
    4. Through our behavior we contribute to a positive learning atmosphere (see class rules, training room rules, etc.).
    5. We use the lesson time as active learning time.
    6. We ask when we want something to drink or use the toilet. Going to the toilet only takes place in exceptional cases during class time and then only individually, without a smartphone and is documented in the class register.
    7. We don’t eat in class, not even chewing gum.
    8. We take off our jackets and our hats in class. The exception to this is religiously based headgear.
    9. It is important to wear appropriate clothing during physical education classes.

These school regulations were approved by the school conference on March 4, 2024.

Media Usage Regulations

for private digital devices in lessons at the Elisabeth Selbert Comprehensive School

_______________________________________________________________________________

As a school, we want all students to use digital media responsibly. That’s why working with private, digital devices in class is permitted as long as certain rules are adhered to. Private, digital end devices, hereinafter referred to as “end devices”, include tablets, laptops, eBook readers, smartphones and other internet-enabled devices and digital means of communication. It is important to us that students learn how to use devices as work tools in class. For this we need clear and unambiguous rules, which are set out in these terms of use.

Rules for the use of end devices

  1. The use of devices is only permitted on school grounds for teaching purposes.

The following applies:

  • The teacher decides in which teaching phases and with which apps/programs the use of devices is permitted and for what purposes.
  • The creation of photos, videos and sound recordings of any kind is otherwise expressly prohibited in class. This also applies to photographing panel pictures.
  • The ban applies in particular if people can be recognized on the digital material. Creating is only permitted if the person shown and the teacher expressly allow it.
  • Lesson-related material (e.g. scanned worksheets, photographed blackboard pictures, PowerPoint presentations provided by the teacher, notes sent, etc.) may only be used for private purposes
  • No copyrighted material may be distributed.
  1. End devices must always be set to be silent. Headphones should be used in class if, for example, you want to watch videos or listen to audio files.
  2. Secondary level II students are allowed to use laptops and tablets for teaching purposes even during their free periods or breaks. Smartphones may only be used in the upper school classroom and in the upper school self-study center.
  3. It is not mandatory to bring and use devices in class. Students are free to use it. The teacher ensures that students without devices are neither favored nor disadvantaged.

Violations will be taken by the school with disciplinary measures and, if necessary, reported.

Important:

  • The school assumes no liability for loss, theft or damage to end devices or for their data security or backup.
  • The school also assumes no liability for offers and content from third parties that are accessed via the Internet.
  • The students themselves are responsible for its use.
